Time-Efficient Power Loss Calculation for Battery-Electric Powertrains Based on Harmonic Loss Models

This paper combines modeling methods for electric powertrain components to efficiently calculate power losses for arbitrary control methods of the voltage source inverter (VSI). The use of a frequency domain approach allows for the consideration of harmonics in the machine currents and their effects on the currents in the power electronic components and the battery. With the harmonic voltage spectrum of the VSI, harmonic machine losses are taken into account. With low computation time, power loss calculations are possible over the entire machine operating range. The presented methods are validated by test bench measurements.

Abstract

This paper combines modeling methods for electric powertrain components to efficiently calculate power losses for arbitrary control methods of the voltage source inverter (VSI). The use of a frequency domain approach allows for the consideration of harmonics in the machine currents and their effects on the currents in the power electronic components and the battery. With the harmonic voltage spectrum of the VSI, harmonic machine losses are taken into account. With low computation time, power loss calculations are possible over the entire machine operating range. The presented methods are validated by test bench measurements.
