Efficacy of complex therapy for anogenital warts in women using interferon alpha-2b with antioxidants

Objective. To improve the efficacy of complex therapy for low-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection manifested by anogenital warts using recombinant interferon alpha-2b with antioxidants as part of immune corrective therapy. Patients and methods. This study included 240 women with anogenital warts. The study group consisted of 120 women who underwent complex therapy: radiofrequency ablation of pathological growths and administration of recombinant interferon alpha-2b with antioxidants (VIFERON®). The comparison group consisted of 120 women who received radiofrequency treatment only. Results. The acceleration of reparative processes and healing of postoperative wounds after removal of anogenital warts was faster in the group of complex therapy. In 11–14 days after surgical intervention, epithelization occurred in 24.2% of patients who received complex therapy and in 12.5% of patients with traditional approach, in 30 days – in 34.2% and in 20.8%, respectively. Complete wound healing and epithelization on days 40–45 after surgery were achieved in 99.2% of patients in the complex therapy group and in 79.2% of patients in the radiosurgical treatment group. At 3 months after the end of treatment, recurrences were observed in 2.5% of patients in the study group and in 7.5% of patients in the comparison group, which is 3 times less frequent; in 6 months – in 10.0% and 20.8%, respectively, which is 2.1 times less frequent. At 6 months after treatment, HPV type 6 was detected by PCR only in 17.5% of patients in the study group and in 35.0% of patients in the comparison group, which is 2 times less frequent; HPV type 11 – in 10.8% and 23.3% respectively, which is 2.2 times less frequent. Conclusion. The study demonstrates a positive clinical efficacy of complex therapy for low-risk HPV manifested by anogenital warts using recombinant interferon alpha-2b with antioxidants as part of immune corrective therapy, exceeding the effects of traditional radiosurgical treatment without immunoagents: faster and complete epithelization, low number of recurrences and virus elimination.
