Feasibility Analysis and Sizing for High-Speed IPMSM Designs
This paper presents an analytical tool for sizing and evaluating the feasibility of high-speed interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (HS-IPMSMs). The mechanical stress, shaft resonance, and sizing models are specifically modified and combined to form a fast analytical tool for preliminary validations of HS-IPMSM design targets. The single-layer flat-, V-, and spoke-type topologies are evaluated using the proposed analytical tool for a 5 kW 100,000 rpm IPMSM design case study. The comparative analysis indicates that the 4-pole flat-type rotor topology can satisfy the minimum mechanical feasibility under the extreme case assumptions. The results were later verified using a more accurate finite element model based response surface analysis, in which the maximum mechanical stress was found within the range estimated by the feasibility analysis tool. This analytical tool can also be used to generate first-generation designs that are potentially feasible for iterative optimizations.
