Investigation of Multi-Phase Electric Motors Having the Same Electromagnetic Structure Considering Performance Trade-off
This paper investigates three Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) utilizing a unified core design. These motors share the same stator and rotor components but differ in their winding configurations to accommodate varying phase numbers. The primary objective of this unified core design is to enhance the manufacturing adaptability and cost-efficiency of electric motors by standardizing the platform across different phase configurations. Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a comprehensive evaluation of the performance characteristics of 3-phase, 6-phase, and 12-phase motor models under fan loads is performed, including harmonic analysis and electromagnetic vibration assessments. The paper concludes by discussing the tradeoffs associated with different phase combinations and the feasibility of using a unified core design in various industrial applications.
