Computationally Efficient Estimation of Thermally Induced Stresses in Motorette Using Numerical Homogenization Techniques and Experimental Validation

Estimations of temperature and strain are crucial for optimizing performance and ensuring reliability in electromagnetic devices. Inaccurate estimations could lead to excessive temperatures and fatigue issues, especially in complex geometries where computational costs are significant. Therefore, there is a need for an accurate and efficient method for thermo-mechanical modeling. This study aims to develop a precise and computationally efficient model for thermally induced mechanical stress in electromagnetic devices using homogenization techniques. Experimental validation is carried out on the model of a motorette which has anisotropic thermal and orthotopic mechanical material properties. Results show good agreement between FEM simulations using homogenization approximations and measurement. This demonstrates the computational efficiency and accuracy with temperature and strain estimation errors of less than 1 Kelvin and 0.1 millimeters, respectively for the homogenized technique.
