Influence of Ratio of Outer Diameter and Axial Length on Torque density in Axial Wound Field Flux Switching Motor with Segmental Rotors

The downsizing and weight reduction of motors are desired in aircraft applications. This paper presents the effect of L/D on torque density in an axial wound field flux switching motor (AWFFSM) with segmental rotors. In this paper, the torque density is compared by changing L/D from 0.106 to 0.312. In AWFFSM with segmental rotors, in which the motor volume is constant regardless of L/D, the motor has the highest torque-volume density at L/D = 0.156. Whereas, the motor has the highest torque-weight density at L/D= 0.127. It is also found that the weight of the motor decreases as the motor becomes flatter. The material discussed in this paper may help provide insight in a guide the downsizing and weight reduction in AWFFSM.
