Systemic Stability Evaluation of a Miniature Maglev Drive System for a Pediatric Left Ventricular Assist Device
Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) options for pediatric patients are severely limited. We proposed a novel, implantable LVAD for pediatric use that includes a magnetically levitated (MagLev) bearing to improve hemocompatibility. The stability performance of this MagLev bearing was evaluated on a testing setup as well as a full prototype. Both the testing setup and full prototype showed responsive and stable characteristic. The LVAD prototype achieved a control range of 0.2 mm and was able to rotate at a target 17,000 rpm while maintaining magnetic levitation.
