Dynamic Non-Linear Numerical-Analytical Model for Synchronous Homopolar Machines

This paper presents a dynamic analytical-numerical model for analysing synchronous homopolar machines (SHMs), offering an alternative tool to computationally intensive 3-D element analysis (FEA) for the design. The architecture of an SHM supplying two independent DC-links via diode rectifiers is analysed, and a case study validates the methodology against 3-D FE analysis. This paper proposes an analytical electromagnetic model for SHMs, addressing the challenge of modelling the dynamic performance when operating with diode rectifiers at the output, also capturing the magnetic saturation of the sleeves. The analytical model is numerically implemented and its predictions are compared with the 3D FE analysis. The comparison demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model in estimating the performance in different operating conditions with significantly lower computational burden.
