Zolon Drug as a Corrosion Inhibitor for Aluminum in HCl Medium
Corrosion, therefore, presents a challenge to the upkeep of aluminum alloys, especially within an acidic environment such as hydrochloric acid, HCl. The present study describes the effectiveness of Zolon (Azithromycin), a broad-spectrum antibiotic, as a green corrosion inhibitor of AA6063 aluminum alloy in 1 M HCl. The electrochemical analyses, such as OCP and LSV, revealed that Zolon acts to reduce corrosion rates and enhance resistance polarization through the protective film that forms on the aluminum surface. Results showed a reduction in corrosion current density from 9.14×10−3 A/cm² for the control to 7.96×10−3 A/cm² at 0.8 g/L Zolon, with corresponding corrosion rate reductions and anodic shifts in corrosion potentials. Optical microscopy at 40x magnification confirmed smoother, less damaged surfaces with Zolon application. These findings demonstrate Zolon's potential as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor, offering sustainable solutions for protecting aluminum in aggressive environments.
