Body Mass Index Calculator: IoT-Based

Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to calculate an individual's nutritional health status using the weight and height. Body Mass Index provides a clue that leads to further medical tests and subsequent confirmation of ailments prevalent in those who are overweight and obese. Individuals who are overweight and obese are at a risk of developing a wide range of pronounced illnesses and medical issues such as; hypertension, dyslipidaemia, type-2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and poor quality of life when compared to individuals who are not overweight and obese. There are traditional manual approaches to checking Body Mass Index but they are time-consuming, prone to errors, and mostly not "cloud-based". This work calculates Body Mass Index which could be accessible in cloud real-time. It incorporated components such as; ESP8266 Wi-Fi module for internet connectivity, an Arduino Uno R3 for mathematical computations, a body weight sensor, a load cell amplifier module, and a HC-SR05 height measurement sensor. Connected devices with the "Blynk App" installed display the output value. This developed IoT based Body Mass Index calculator system gives an accuracy of 99.10% and a time reduction of 1.2 % per individual when compared with a manual approach.
