ForenSEEK: Gamifying Learning Experiences in Digital Forensics using Unity Engine and Augmented Reality Technology
This study focuses on developing ForenSEEK, a game-based application designed to encourage Filipino young adults (aged 18-30) to pursue careers in digital forensics or cybersecurity in response to the growing demand for these professions due to the increase in cybercrime cases in the Philippines, mainly caused by end-users’ limited cybersecurity awareness. Unlike typical 2-dimensional (2D) games, ForenSEEK integrates Augmented Reality (AR) technology and a feedback mechanism to create a more interactive and immersive learning experience in various cybercrime scenarios. Survey results from 150 young adults (113 students and 37 employees) showed significant overall knowledge improvement, from approximately 54% in the Pre-Test to 77% in Post-Test, with a t-value (8.35) greater than the 1.976 critical t-value and a p-value (6.18E-14) below the 0.05 significance level. Additionally, $\mathbf{8 2. 6 7 \%}$ found the feedback mechanism effective, and $\mathbf{6 2. 6 7 \%}$ expressed interest in a cybersecurity career after playing the game. These findings indicate that the game not only effectively improved the participants’ cybersecurity knowledge and career interests, but also enhanced their learning experience through feedback. Furthermore, ForenSEEK received an overall mean score of 6.29 out of 7, with a low standard deviation of 0.15, reflecting that respondents “Strongly Agree” on the 8 Game User Experience Satisfaction Scale (GUESS) Subscales: Usability/ Playability, Narratives, Player Engrossment, Enjoyment, Creative Freedom, Audio Aesthetics, Personal Gratitude, and Visual Aesthetics. Therefore, ForenSEEK offers a practical approach to bridge the cybersecurity gap by innovating the way cybersecurity is learned.
