Sustainable Farming Gamification for Vocational High School Students in Indonesia

The decline in farmer population and sustainable agriculture are two issues to be solved for Indonesia to sustain its large population. The former are caused by many factors such as rapid urbanization and the conversion of farmland into housing areas or industrial zones. The latter concerns about sustainable farming practices in line with the Sustainable Development Goal envisioned by the United Nations. An approach to solve these two problems is to educate many young Indonesians in the agricultural occupation, especially those who enroll in vocational high school. The vocational high school students become the focus because when they graduate and partake in farming occupation, they will regenerate the aging farming population. This approach should also ensure a focus on sustainable agriculture practices such as using organic fertilizer. Furthermore, because the young population in Indonesia falls under generation Z or younger, this requires a modern approach to deliver the lesson, especially via gamification. To support this effort, this research proposes a gamification to teach sustainable agriculture to first-year students enrolled in vocational high school. Results from evaluation study shows that 7 of 8 teachers agreed that the gamification represents learning material they used to teach in the classroom.
