Enhancing Power Grid Reliability in Bangladesh: An IoT-Based Approach to Transmission Line Fault Detection

The rapid expansion of Bangladesh's power grid to meet growing energy demands necessitates an efficient and reliable approach to transmission line fault detection. This paper presents the design and implementation of an IoT-based transmission line fault detection system tailored specifically for Bangladesh's unique environmental and infrastructural challenges. By leveraging real-time data from a network of sensors monitoring current, temperature, and environmental conditions, the system enables immediate detection and response to unsymmetrical faults, significantly reducing the risk of prolonged power outages. The proposed system integrates GPS for precise fault location, GSM for alert notifications, and Wi-Fi for remote monitoring, creating a comprehensive solution that enhances grid reliability. Additionally, the system's prototype model demonstrates its practical applicability, offering a user-friendly interface for grid operators and proving its effectiveness through real-time monitoring and fault detection. This research contributes to the modernization of Bangladesh’s power infrastructure, aligning with the nation's goals of sustainable development and energy security by ensuring an uninterrupted and stable power supply.
