Climate Change Risk, Vulnerability and Resilience in Badagry, Lagos, Nigeria

Urban climate resilience is increasingly crucial in the face of climate change impacts. The risk of climate change and its impacts differ across the globe. The study, therefore, examined the extent of the climate change risks, vulnerability, and resilience in Badagry Lagos State, Nigeria, to suggest measures in combating the risks for the sustainable living conditions of the residents. The Resilience concept was adopted as a framework for the study. Primary (questionnaire and interview) and secondary sources of data (population figures, and maps from local government) were adopted A multi-stage sampling strategy was used. The population of the selected wards was obtained (35,676) and projected (83,196) by 2024. Using a proximity sample ratio of 0.161, 134 residents were sampled from the three (3) wards with proximity to the waterside and densely populated areas. Proportional awareness analysis was used along with descriptive statistics to analyze the data. The findings revealed that the majority (53%) of the respondents were male while female residents accounted for (47%),. The level of awareness differs in different areas of Badagry; (65.0%) awareness level in Ibereko while 70.4% in Awhanjigoh. Erosion has the highest parameters of climate change parameters with a (4.13) mean score, against the weighted average of 3.69. All the areas are susceptible to the impact of climate change in Badagry except the Apa area with a mean impact of 3.32. Infrastructure improvement (road construction) drainage construction and building of Jetty for water transportation are climate-resilient projects in the area. Community-based monitoring early warning systems and co-management are suggested as methods for climate resilience by urban planners. The severity of climate change in the study is significant and needs the community's attention through nature-based solutions and government for sustainable living conditions of the residents.
