Evaluating the Transient Stability of an Island Grid Network
The paper carried out a stability assessment to determine whether or not synchronism will be maintained after a disturbance. The paper also determines the critical clearing time it will take before synchronism will be reached. In order to achieve this aim, the Benin-IkejaWest-Aiyede-Oshogbo-Benin (BIAOB) network cluster was used. The Equal Area Criterion (EAC) algorithms with EAC power and faults were simulated on the MATLAB 2015a m.file command window. In order to maintain stability, the initial power angle for each machine was set to zero. The simulated results show that critical clearing time when faults take place on each power plant at which A1=A2 for Egbin, Sapele, Papalanto and Omotosho power plants were presented 0.097sec,0.105sec,0.0662sec and 0.065sec respectively. Further results show that Ikeja west-Aiyede and Oshogbo-Benin buses are more stable in ring circuit and also confirm Benin as a critical bus closely followed by Oshogbo bus in Nigerian power transmission network. Additional results show a transfer reactance of 0.65pu for Sapele power plant leading to highest critical time of 0.11s. The significance of the study therefore is to determine stability of the network.
