Addictive Intelligence: Understanding Psychological, Legal, and Technical Dimensions of AI Companionship
We examine the emerging phenomenon of âaddictive intelligenceâ through the lens of AI companionship platforms and their psychological impact. Centered on the tragic case of 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III, who developed a relationship with an AI character and ultimately committed suicide, this case study explores how AI companions can create powerful psychological dependencies through their unique combination of personalization and boundless ability to create content. Our analysis explores how AI companions may deteriorate human relationship capabilities and potentially undermine human dignity. We highlight critical gaps in current regulatory frameworks and propose potential interventions, including technical safeguards, dynamic usage policies, and economic incentives to promote healthier AI interactions. This study underscores the urgent need for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of psychology, technology, and law to address the challenges posed by increasingly sophisticated AI companionship systems.
