On the transmission performance of an effective uniaxial medium in application to A-sandwich radome wall structure
Abstract The transmission performance of the planar A-sandwich radome wall structure (Quartz/Honeycomb/Quartz) was analyzed by substituting the multilayered design with a single layer characterized by effective electromagnetic parameters. We employed the long-wavelength effective medium approach to represent the permittivity of the individual layers that make up the radome wall by a general effective permittivity tensor for a uniaxial dielectric layer. We assumed a multilayer structure consisting of quartz skin layers of 0.1 mm thickness and a honeycomb core layer of 1 mm thickness, with an overall thickness of 1.2 mm. The angular dependence of transmittance, reflectance, and absorbance of radiation with frequency up to 27.5 GHz revealed a substantial transparency of the effective uniaxial layer at a wide range of angles of incidence. Specifically, the average transmittance of radiation incident at 60 ∘ was > 98% at 10 GHz (the center of the X-band), and 94% at 22.5 GHz (the center of the K-band). These findings highlight the potential for replacing the planar A-sandwich radome wall by an effective single slab across a broad spectrum of frequencies and angles of incidence.
