Axial-Gap Type Adjustable Field Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Using Coil-End and Zero-Sequence Current

This paper proposes a new adjustable field permanent magnet synchronous motor (AFPMSM) and its drive system using armature coil-end and zero-sequence current. AFPMSMs have been widely studied to achieve a wide driving range. However, conventional AFPMSMs require an additional winding and circuit to control the field flux, resulting in a significant drive system. In contrast, the proposed AFPMSM drive system utilizes the armature coil-end and the zero-sequence current. In other words, the size of the proposed AFPMSM drive system is the same as that of the traditional constant field PMSM drive system even though the proposed motor has field control ability. In this paper, magnetic field analysis and circuit simulation are carried out to verify the validity of the proposed system.
