Motor Initiatives Aimed at Reduction of Rare-Earth Usage
The global demand for Electric Vehicles (EVs) is increasing because EVs do not emit exhaust gases and contribute to mitigating global warming. However, the electric motors of EVs utilize some amount of rare-earth materials, which carry supply risks. To address these concerns, Nissan has undertaken efforts to mitigate supply risks and enhance the sustainable evolution of electric motors. This paper introduces four initiatives by Nissan: “Heavy Rare-earth less magnet”, “Magnet recycle”, “Rare-earth free magnet”, and “Externally Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM)”, all aimed at reducing the reliance on rare-earth materials.
