The comparison between inhalational lidocaine and intravenous lidocaine regarding hemodynamic changes and norepinephrine levels during laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation procedures

BACKGROUND: Laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation procedures typically evoke sympathetic stimulation and the subsequent release of norepinephrine, which affect hemodynamic conditions. Lidocaine has been observed to weaken hemodynamic responses and can be administered through several routes. However, the influence of the administration route on lidocaine’s hemodynamic response has not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this study was to analyze the comparative impact of inhalational lidocaine and intravenous (IV) lidocaine on hemodynamic changes and norepinephrine levels during endotracheal intubation and laryngoscopy procedures.METHODS: This study employed a randomized controlled clinical trial design. The research was conducted on patients undergoing endotracheal intubation and laryngoscopy. The samples were divided into two groups, each consisting of 22 patients: a group receiving 1.5 mg/kg BW IV lidocaine and a group receiving 1.5 mg/kg BW inhalational lidocaine.RESULTS: There were no significant differences observed in hemodynamic response parameters, including pulse rate, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, systolic blood pressure, and norepinephrine levels, between the IV lidocaine and inhalational lidocaine groups (P>0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Both IV and inhalational lidocaine administration yielded similar hemodynamic responses and norepinephrine levels during endotracheal intubation and laryngoscopy procedures.
