Dynamics of snow zones in solidifying planetary cores
Iron-rich cores of small rocky planets solidify in original ways. Crystals can form, settle and remelt deep in the core, nourishing fluid motions that may sustain a planetary magnetic field. Interpreting magnetic observations requires advancing the limits of large-scale models and understanding the crucial influence of crystals on the resulting flow.
