Case Study on the Remodeling of Laboratory Medicine according to International Instructions: Focus on the Case of S Hospital

This paper reports a case study of the remodeling of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine at S hospital, conducted according to international guidelines. The remodeling project was carried out for approximately 40 months, from October 2019 to February 2023.The design direction focused on efficiency, safety, and spatial flexibility. The team composition, planning and programming, schematic design, design development, construction documents, construction, and relocation processes were systematically performed.According to the remodeling goals, the efficiency was enhanced by consolidating the five previously distributed blood collection rooms into two and merging the duplicate laboratories from the main building and cancer hospital to improve space and personnel efficiency.Safety was strengthened by reducing the exposure frequency of specimens to clinical laboratory scientists, expanding the negative pressure facilities, and applying a negative pressure monitoring system.Spatial flexibility was ensured by designating parts of the laboratories for future consideration remodeling. This paper shares cases where design changes were necessary at the time of construction, which occurred 40 months after the initial design plans, and instances where it was impossible to implement international guidelines.By sharing these insights, the data are expected to be helpful in planning the construction and relocation of clinical laboratories.
