Shaping the Path to Electric Vehicle (EV) Transition in India: An Assessment of Demographic Factors and Charging Behaviour of EV Users in Indian Metropolitan City

The rapid industrialisation and urbanisation in India have led to a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions, with the transport sector being one of the major contributors. To address this issue, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has gained momentum as a promising solution to curb pollution and reduce energy demand from the transport sector. It is crucial to understand the factors that influence the adoption of EVs in India and evaluate the effectiveness of the existing policy measures to promote their integration. Within this context, the present study is focused to examine the various factors that influence the adoption of EVs in Bengaluru urban area. The study examines the socio-technical factors, availability of charging infrastructure, and user experience as key determinants of EV adoption within the city. The critical demographic characteristics have also been identified as influential factor in the adoption of EVs. The target population for the study was individuals with either a two-wheeler or four-wheeler EVs. The responses were collected from 432 participants through non-probability purposive sampling. The findings from this study are expected to assist policymakers, government entities, and industry stakeholders in developing more effective policies and marketing approaches to enhance consumer uptake of EVs in India.
