Semantic Network Analysis of Learners and Teachers' Perceptions on Grammar Instruction

This study aims to analyze and compare the perceptions of grammar instruction among high school students and teachers, deriving educational implications. Open-ended surveys were conducted with 139 second-year high school students and 26 teachers in the Chungbuk region. The collected data were analyzed using semantic network analysis, focusing on centrality index and CONCOR analysis results. The findings reveal that both students and teachers value "interest," "application to real-life situations," "clear explanations," and "understanding" as essential components of effective grammar instruction. However, while students emphasized engaging and enjoyable teaching methods as the core of good grammar lessons, teachers highlighted the importance of lessons that equip students with the ability to explore linguistic phenomena and apply them accurately and appropriately in real-life contexts. The study underscores the need for further discussions on selecting appropriate examples to help students understand real-life language use, the importance of motivation in grammar instruction, and the effectiveness of exploratory grammar lessons in practical teaching contexts.
