‘SUSINCHAIN’: the European project on upscaling the insect value chain for food and feed in Europe
Abstract The SUSINCHAIN project, involving 35 partners from industry and academia, has generated technical advancements, and numerous publications, scientific reports, and policy recommendations aimed at advancing the insect industry in Europe. This special issue highlights key research results in the fields of insect farm management, insect-based food and feed production, processing techniques, safety and allergenicity, and consumer perception. Scenario analysis was used to evaluate potential future developments for the insect sector, focusing on business models, sustainability, and regulatory uncertainties. Recommendations for scaling the insect sector were developed, addressing market opportunities, insect rearing, safety, and sustainability in alignment with the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP). Farm management strategies, including pest control and transportation optimization, were explored to improve insect production efficiency. Processing innovations, such as dielectric drying, were found to enhance the stability and microbiological quality of harvested insects, supporting their use in aquaculture and animal feed. Consumer acceptance of insect-based products was found to be influenced by sensory qualities and health perceptions, underscoring the importance of meeting consumer expectations when producing insects for food. Chemical composition and chemical and microbiological safety of insect by-products like frass were investigated, to ensure safe insect feed and food production.
