Poly-γ-d-glutamic acid ameliorates obesity by modulating gut microbiota dysbiosis in high-fat diet-induced obesity mice

The ameliorative effects of poly-γ- d -glutamic acid (γ-PGA) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in a mouse model were investigated. 100 mg/kg b·w γ-PGA was orally administered to mice with HFD-induced obesity for 8 weeks. γ-PGA treatment significantly reduced the body weight of the mice compared with that of HFD-fed mice. The morphological characteristics and mean area of epididymal white adipocytes decreased. Gut microbiota analysis demonstrated that γ-PGA administration decreased the bacterial class Erysipelotrichia associated with HFD. The representative genus of decreased Erysipelotrichia were Turicibacter and Faecalibaculum . Therefore, this study demonstrated that γ-PGA could ameliorate experimental obesity and could be potential substance for clinical use in the suppression of obesity. • The anti-obesity effect of poly-γ- d -glutamic acid (γ-PGA) was investigated. • γ-PGA treatment ameliorated obesity induced by high-fat diet in mice. • γ-PGA reduced obesity-related microorganisms in the gut microbiota of mice with high-fat diet-induced obesity.
