Predicting cyclic response of corroded <scp>RC</scp> columns through fiber‐based modeling approaches in <scp>OpenSees</scp>

Abstract Seismic performance evaluation and strengthening of aging reinforced concrete bridge columns requires predictive simulation, through numerical analysis, of their response with sufficient accuracy. To find a suitable model for this purpose, the current study examined eight fiber‐based modeling strategies with different beam‐column elements, steel models, shear models, and bond‐slip models to analyze 30 circular columns, for which experimental response under cyclic pushover tests is obtained from published literature. These columns included shear‐ and flexure‐critical columns with various axial load ratios, uniformly corroded, bottom zone corroded, and splash zone corroded columns. The suitability of these models is assessed by comparing experimental and numerical responses associated with global hysteretic behavior and height‐wise curvature distribution of these columns. Results signify no notable influence of element type and steel model type on the accuracy of the studied response. Finally, a time‐efficient model that provides reasonable accuracy to predict the response of corroded columns is identified.
