Bridging the Financial Gap: A Comparative Study of Traditional and Alternative Financing Solutions for SMEs in the Digital Era
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) experience the challenge of limited financial capacity which hampers growth and sustainable operation. However, traditional sources of funds including bank loans are still the most common source of capital; yet it is still restricted with very many conditions such as eligibility and collateral. The purpose of this paper is to determine how these two models of financing – traditional and non-traditional – which include crowdfunding, P2P, and financetech can effectively fund the SMEs’ financial gap in the digital environment. Qualitative and quantitative data are employed where a literature review, SME owners’ questionnaires, and expert interviews are used in assessing accessibility, efficiency, and sustainability. The study shows that the sources of funds are more flexible and easily accessible though there are regulatory concerns and compromise investment returns. Finally, the study posits that a combination of conventional and innovative financing approaches may hold the key to a better financial environment for such businesses.” The paper recommends that future studies should be undertaken together with policy intervention in order to address the issue of financial inclusion for SMEs.
