Measurement of Output Intensity of the Light-Curing Devices in Dental Private Offices: An Analytical Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction: We aimed to evaluate the light intensity output of diode light-curing units (LCUs) in private clinics and assess clinical predicators in this regard, including the type of LCU, number of times used during the day, checking light cure intensity, presence of radiometer, and use of a sleeve. Methods: A total of 103 light-curing devices from private dental clinics in Karbala city, Iraq, were included in this study. The study was conducted from January 2021 to January 2022. All the tested units were light-emitting diode type, both wireless and wired chair type models. The intensity output (mW/cm 2 ) of the LCU was measured using a light intensity radiometer (DentAmerica) by one educated investigator. Results: The linear regression model (overall model test: P = 0.009) showed that the clinical age of the LCU, number of times used during the day, and type of LCU were not statistically significant predicators for the output intensity of the LCU ( P > 0.05). Regular check of light cure intensity, presence of radiometer, and the usage of a sleeve were statistically significant predicators for the output intensity of the LCU ( P < 0.05). Conclusion: The majority of the investigated devices had satisfactory light intensity. It is advised to use sleeves and regularly check LCUs with radiometers to ensure an acceptable output for clinical use.
