ARCUS 2024: A Report on the Annual Research Congress for Undergraduate Students at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh

From August 2023 to August 2025, AIIMS Rishikesh hosted the ARCUS 2024 Conference, an event designed to explore innovations in medicine and access to health care. The conference aimed to provide medical students and young professionals with practical insights into emerging healthcare challenges and solutions, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world clinical practice. The central theme, ‘Scaling New Heights: Innovations in Medicine and Access to Healthcare’, highlighted critical areas where advancements in medical practice could improve patient outcomes. A key focus of the conference was on delivering health care in challenging environments, with sessions exploring the practical application of medical knowledge in extreme conditions. For example, discussions on high-altitude medicine addressed the physiological challenges faced by patients and healthcare providers in thin-air environments, emphasising the importance of early diagnosis and targeted interventions for altitude-related illnesses. These insights are directly applicable to practitioners working in mountainous or remote regions. The conference also shed light on how emerging technologies are reshaping medical education and practice. A panel discussion on modern medical education stressed the importance of integrating technology, such as virtual simulations and telemedicine, to enhance traditional learning methods. This shift is essential to prepare future clinicians for a healthcare landscape increasingly reliant on digital tools. A significant highlight was the focus on aerospace medicine, where participants learned about the unique medical requirements in space travel and their implications for earthbound healthcare systems. The session underscored the need for adaptable medical protocols to manage health risks in both terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments, providing valuable knowledge for clinicians interested in frontier medical research. Workshops played a pivotal role in translating theoretical knowledge into practical skills. Participants engaged in hands-on training in areas such as neonatal resuscitation, surgical skills, laparoscopy and cataract surgery. These workshops were particularly valuable for undergraduate students, offering them a rare opportunity to practice essential clinical techniques in a supervised setting. Feedback from attendees highlighted the importance of such practical sessions in building confidence and competence in clinical procedures. Furthermore, there was a call for greater engagement with public health topics, particularly addressing healthcare disparities and strategies to improve access to care in underserved communities. ARCUS 2024 fostered learning, collaboration and research among young healthcare professionals, promoting innovation and practical insights to improve patient care, advance medical science and address public health challenges.
