Enhanced IP&O Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm for Photovoltaic Systems
Solar irradiance and ambient temperature are subject to continuous variability which results in continuous alteration in the generated power of the photovoltaic system. To address this, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) systems are essential for real-time optimization of power extraction from PV arrays within photovoltaic systems. Over recent years, various MPPT techniques have been developed to accurately track the Maximum Power Point (MPP). MPPT systems play a crucial role in maximizing the power generated by photovoltaic arrays, irrespective of variations in temperature, irradiance, or load characteristics. These systems utilize the output power from the PV array to control the DC/DC converter, thereby falling overall system complexity and enhancing operational efficiency. This paper offerings a relative analysis of two prominent MPPT algorithms: the Perturb & Observe (P&O) algorithm and Improved Perturb & Observe (IP&O) algorithm. The IP&O method is defined as a sophisticated methodology for perturbation and observation that includes an adaptive algorithm for dynamically correcting the hysteresis bandwidth and reference step size. The results indicate that the IP&O method provides a more effective increase in total PV output power under fluctuating atmospheric conditions compared to the traditional P&O method.
