Setting the Scene for THz Communications: Recent Progress in Regulation and Standardisation
In the recent past research efforts on THz communications have significantly increased. In parallel activities to secure spectrum availability and to create standards have already started. This paper provides an overview on the current status in standardisation and regulation of THz Communications addressing the frequency range 252 to 450 GHz. The basic features of the first wireless standard operating around 300 GHz published by IEEE 802 as well as ETSI’s pre-standardisation activities targeting the potential incorporation of THz communications in 6G are briefly presented in this contribution. Based on the recent edition of radio regulations future activities targeting WRC 2027 and WRC 2031 are described an a new concept for flexible and agile spectrum management is introduced.
