Modulation Backscattering Communication with Applications to Augmented RFID Systems

This paper explores various time-variant backscattering communication techniques from the perspectives of identification and sensing, providing a detailed explanation of their operating principles, characteristics, and limitations. By modulating the reflected power in the time domain, additional frequency components are introduced that differ from the ones transmitted by the reader device. This modulation effectively suppresses clutter and self-interference from the reader, thereby enhancing tag detection and improving system coverage. In this context, both electronic and mechanical modulation techniques are investigated across different linear and nonlinear RFID systems. Additionally, the concept of hybrid tags is introduced, where chipped or chipless RFID tags are combined with harmonic transponders. This hybrid approach leverages the advantages of both systems, offering improved performance in terms of detection accuracy, range, and reliability. The paper highlights these advancements and their potential to overcome the limitations of conventional RFID systems, paving the way for more robust and versatile backscattering communication technologies.
