Toward A Token Economy Based Approach for Collaborative Concept Inventory Development by Faculties and Students

We present our initial idea on collaborative development of concept inventory by faculties and students using a token economy based approach. Using this approach, students are encouraged to participate in the process, which formally accepts and processes their inputs into the corresponding concept inventories if validated, implementing the fundamental principle of student-centered learning while still retaining the function of an instructor as the major source of knowledge in the traditional teacher-centered classrooms. In addition, for quality assurance on student participation during the process, we employ a token economy that reinforces a student's positive participations (behaviors) and discourages his/her negative ones. This research has been specifically designed to mitigate the apparent incongruence between the ideologies and principles behind student-centered learning and concept inventory.
