Analysis of Dual-hop Multiple DF Relays System with RIS over Nakagami-m Fading

The future 6G communication networks are expected to transform wireless connectivity by providing unparalleled data rates, ultra-low latency, and widespread device connectivity. To achieve these ambitious goals, novel methods like dual-hop relay systems and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) have received much attention. This work presents a complete performance analysis of a dual-hop relay system improved with RIS operating over Nakagami-m fading channels, a versatile model that represents a wide range of fading circumstances from severe to mild. We propose an analytical framework to assess critical performance metrics, such as average bit error probability (ABEP), in the presence of Nakagami-m fading. The study demonstrates the synergistic benefits of incorporating RIS into multiple dual-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems, with significant gains in signal reliability and system capacity under a variety of fading scenarios. Numerical findings show that this integration effectively reduces fading effects while improving overall system performance. Our findings have important implications for the design and optimisation of next-generation 6G communication systems, particularly the ability of dual-hop relay systems with RIS to achieve improved performance in complex propagation scenarios. This study sets the path for further research into enhanced relay and RIS setups, which will help to realise resilient and high-capacity 6G networks.
