Privacy and Security in Torrenting: Challenges and Solutions
The internet has become an essential part of our daily lives, revolutionizing communication, bridging distances, and transforming how we live and connect with the world. Its journey began in the 1950s with the development of electronic computers, and the U.S. Department of Defense’s ARPANET project in the 1960s, which pioneered packet networking, laid the groundwork for today’s digital landscape. Among the innovations that followed, torrenting has emerged as a widely used peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing method. While it offers convenience and access to vast resources, torrenting also exposes users to significant privacy risks and security vulnerabilities, including IP address exposure, data breaches, and malware attacks. This paper delves into these threats, exploring how they compromise user security, and discusses strategies to mitigate them, highlighting the importance of adopting safe practices in our increasingly connected world.
