A Generalized Design Framework of Grid Integrated PV-ESS Based EV Charging Station

Environmental concerns and reduction of global emission are causing electric vehicles (EVs) as the best alternative to traditional internal combustion engines. The increased EV adoption will lead to the need of charging stations. Integrating photovoltaic (PV) systems with EV charging will not only encourages sustainability, but also guarantee a more resilient energy system. Therefore, this paper proposes a solar based bidirectional charger favorable for E-mobility occupied grid tied system. Extraction of maximum power from solar, harmonics elimination of grid currents is checked in this system. This configuration employs bi-directional power flow management within the system, allowing for renewable energy resources utilization. An interleaved Boost converter at the PV end increase the voltage level from the PV module to the desired value with the utilization of MPPT controller. The bidirectional charger either charge the EV battery or discharge the battery if necessary. Also, charging and discharging control strategies are used for battery control to enhance the reliability of the battery. A dc link voltage controller interfaced with the proportional-resonant (PR) controller for inverter is developed to mitigate the grid current harmonics. The optimal design strategies of the resonant controller are used for harmonic compensator. Extensive simulations were carried out demonstrating various modes of operations in MATLAB Simulink environment.
