Spatial modeling of ambient traffic noise using open data

Due to the growing number of people living in urban areas, there is an increasing need for measuring, quantifying, and preventing the negative health effects caused by traffic noise. Continuous monitoring and mitigation of harmful impacts have been enabled through the definition of methodologies and standards in this field at the European Union (EU) level. The increasing availability of open data and open-source software packages through crowdsourcing platforms provides opportunities for modeling and analyzing such phenomena. This paper explores the possibilities of using open-access data for traffic noise modeling and analyzes the intensity of modeled noise compared to noise measured by mobile devices through crowdsourcing platforms. The results of spatial noise modeling for the entire area of Belgrade, which constitute the outcome of this research, have been published in GIS format and are publicly available. Critical points have been further analyzed at specific locations.
