Designing a Virtual Reality (VR) Storyboard for Structural Steel Installation in the Industrialized Building System (IBS)
The integration of VR technology into the construction industry has the potential to revolutionize training for Industrial Building Systems (IBS) installation. Current IBS training methods adhere to National Occupancy Skill Standard (NOSS) competency expectations, which necessitate significant space, materials, and equipment. This often leads to inconsistencies in training due to high costs and time constraints. The use of VR through serious games for IBS installation training addresses these challenges by providing a cost-effective, consistent, and safe training environment. This project aims to develop a virtual reality-based game that functions as a serious educational tool while aligning with NOSS competency requirements. The project objectives include analyzing the IBS installation process to develop a VR gaming framework, creating a NOSS-compliant VR training module for IBS steel frame installation, and evaluating the effectiveness of VR training compared to traditional on-site method. This paper presents the initial phase of the project, focusing on the design of a storyboard that integrates NOSS learning outcomes for IBS steel frame installation training within the VR training content. Aligning skill competency learning outcomes with the VR storyboard design during the initial phase will be crucial for creating an interactive and comprehensive training game. The next stage of project is to transform the storyboard into interactive VR scenario and game creation. The effectiveness of the games will be measured through a user application test, which includes surveys completed by trainees and professionals based on their experience with the VR game
