Strengthening Artificial Intelligence-On-Edge Education in the Philippines: A Teacher-Centric Curriculum Development Strategies
This study evaluates AI-on-Edge education in the Philippines and proposes a comprehensive curriculum framework to address the identified gaps. A survey involving 50 faculty members from 25 higher education institutions, mainly from ICT and engineering, was conducted to gather insights into educators' experience, confidence levels, and needs in teaching AI-on-Edge technologies. The survey results revealed that most respondents are between 26–35 years old, highlighting a youthful and technologically adept audience. Notably, while respondents reported significant experience in machine learning and descriptive statistics, there was a marked gap in practical experience with AI-on-edge technologies. Critical areas for AI-on-Edge applications identified include agriculture and disaster risk mitigation, reflecting the primary national concerns on food and security. The study underscores the importance of hands-on training, the alignment of curriculum content with high-demand fields, and the availability of comprehensive educational resources. Recommendations include developing hands-on training modules, focusing on high-impact areas, enhancing resource availability, integrating real-world applications, and addressing critical pedagogical factors such as energy efficiency and post-sales support. This proposed curriculum aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet industry demands and contribute to the technological and economic growth of the Philippines.
