Silicon photonics for the mid-IR (Conference Presentation)
We review our results on integration of lasers, modulators, detectors and microfluidic channels on silicon and germanium-based mid-infrared photonic circuits, for both communications and sensing. We show that quantum cascade laser (QCL) bars can be integrated with Ge-on-Si waveguides, that both monolithic and hybrid detectors can be integrated with SOI waveguides and that mid-IR Si and Ge modulators can operate at high data rates. We show preliminary results on mid-IR sensors for healthcare and environmental monitoring.
