Analysis of Fuel Consumption on Ships during Auto Trajectory Operations Based on Fuzzy Logic

Abstract An auto trajectory ship motion control system has been developed on ships to control the ship’s motion according to a predetermined trajectory. The appliance of a control system for maneuvering and moving ships is expected to respond quickly and be able to keep the direction and trajectory due to the sea environmental conditions. Changes in trajectory distance can be shorter or even longer than the recommended trajectory, which will affect fuel consumption. This paper studies and analyzes the effect of the ship’s trajectory control system, the change in trajectory, and its relationship to the amount of fuel consumption throughout the voyage. The design of the control system uses the type 1 Mamdani fuzzy logic method. The research was carried out through a simulation with various tests, namely open loop and close loop, as well as close loop tests with an added wave disturbance factor. The tests were conducted with in accordance with IMO standards, and the test results were analyzed. The set point test of 10° and 20° in the rudder, resulted in an overshoot value of 0.7347° and 0.7355°. The simulation results of trajectory testing without disturbance and with disturbance have an error value that is still within the range of the permitted radius value or the circle of acceptance of the ship. The impact of the control system regarding to the fuel usage is its ability to reduce fuel consumption compared to when the control system is not applied.
