Assessing the Comfort of Fast Boat Passengers in the Jepara - Karimunjawa Operation Area with Direct Measurement Method

Abstract Karimunjawa Island, a national park, draws a significant number of tourists. The relatively high seawater conditions prevent tourists from moving around the island, which is due to the comfortability of ship transportation. This study intends to examine the comfort level of passengers on the Express Bahari 1C Fast Motorboat operating on the Jepara-Karimunjawa route. The study uses a direct measurement approach of the ship’s sailing motion with the ADIS 16364 sensor device, which includes an accelerometer component that acts to measure translational motions (heave, surge, sway) and a gyroscope for rotational motions (roll, pitch, yaw). The measurement findings are in the form of acceleration and velocity motion signals in time domain, which are subsequently processed using filtering, derivative, and integration algorithms to reduce noise and obtain motion displacement. According to the study results, the highest roll velocity occurs at 0.37 deg/s, and the highest roll displacement reaches 0.25 degrees. Meanwhile, the maximum pitch velocity and displacement occurred at 0.36 deg/s and 0.15 degrees, respectively. The maximum heave acceleration measured is about 0.66 m/s 2 . The analysis of passenger comfort was conducted using the international comfort criteria outlined in NATO STANAG 4154 and ISO 2631-1:1997. The equation for motion sickness incidence (MSI) also provided a prediction for passenger comfort, resulting in an average of 11.75% of all passengers reporting discomfort.
