Construcción de espacios turísticos y (re)producción de desigualdades en el Corazón de México

The article examines how the construction of tourist spaces in San Miguel de Allende, known as the "Heart of Mexico," perpetuates socioeconomic inequalities despite its image as a driver of development. To this end, an ethnographic approach is employed that includes 96 interviews, 96 surveys, and observation guides with collaborators from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, allowing for a dense description of local dynamics. The findings reveal that tourism exacerbates disparities by concentrating benefits in the hands of a few, while the local population faces marginalization and exploitation. It is argued that tourism policies must be inclusive to promote equitable development. In conclusion, tourism should be a tool for social well-being, benefiting all stakeholders involved equitably.
