Intraoperative stimulated Raman imaging of human brain tissue for therapy optimization (Conference Presentation)

Glioblastoma, a highly aggressive brain tumor, is treated with resection followed by intraoperative or adjuvant radiotherapy. Predictive diagnostic markers for patient response are needed due to severe side effects of the therapy options. Biomarkers like IDH1 status, MGMT protein levels, and miRNA profiles show prognostic value but aren't measurable intraoperatively. Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) imaging, a label-free, real-time modality, can assess fresh tissue molecular profiles. We developed a mobile SRS device covering the full Raman spectrum (700 - 3300 1/cm) in milliseconds. Our study correlates SRS spectra with standard analyses, to investigate its potential to determine relevant molecular tumor characteristics intraoperatively.
