Treatment of illegal discharge using catalyzed hydrogen peroxide (CHP): A case study

Abstract Illegal discharges have been a significant problem nowadays as this will greatly impact the operation of conventional wastewater treatment plants. These discharges come from untreated influent from factories and industries and could not be treated in a conventional treatment plant. Thus, this research evaluated the incident of illegal discharge to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Kawasan Perindustrian Temasya Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Selangor. It is aimed to assess the chemical treatment’s efficiency in solving the pollution issues using catalyzed hydrogen peroxide (CHP). The results showed the reduction percentage for most of the parameters, whereas the BOD was 94% in March 2018, while COD removal was 98% in July 2018. The reduction of TSS was high in March and July 2018, with 98%, respectively. Later, the Oil & Grease stated the highest reduction compared to other parameters in 7 months with an average of >95%. Moreover, the correlation for the parameters has been determined using ANOVA analysis. Only the interactions between pH and TN showed the response after treatment with the p-value of 0.58527. Therefore, it can be proven that chemical treatment using CHP can be used to treat illegal discharges and reduce further damage to the quality of the effluent.
