Potential implementation of near field communication technology for improving material tracking at construction site
Abstract Construction materials are vital elements at construction sites to run the project successfully. However, the current practice of material tracking systems uses manual methods with several drawbacks. Intelligent and effective solutions based on advanced technology are alternatives to enhance the existing practice of material management systems. Thus, this study was undertaken to identify the potential of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology implementation for material tracking at construction sites. Furthermore, a prototype was developed using NFC to assess and evaluate its capability for materials tracking. This study was conducted using qualitative methods by collecting data through semi-structured interview questions as a research instrument to get feedback from G7 contractors within Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Data collection was analysed using content analysis to provide conceptual and relevant analysis. The significant finding indicates NFC technology has the potential to reduce risk, improve safety and quality, enhance project performance, reduce paper base, and increase productivity. The prototype development provides the substantial implementation of NFC for effective materials tracking. In conclusion, this research contributes to introducing NFC as an innovative technology to enhance the overall material tracking process for better construction site management.
