Instant assessment of lung biopsies using higher harmonic generation microscopy
Currently, there is no fast accurate method to assess the diagnostic quality of a lung biopsy, resulting in unnecessary biopsies or repeat procedures. Higher harmonic generation microscopy (HHGM) can visualize unprocessed tissue within minutes and has potential for intraoperative lung biopsy assessment. In a multicenter study, we image more than 300 lung biopsies a year with transportable HHG-microscopes. The HHGM-images will be compared to conventional histology images and assessed by experienced pathologists. We present the first results of this ongoing study and demonstrate that HHGM creates opportunity for direct treatment of lung tumors.
