ABSTRACT: Adopting an interactional approach, the present study addresses the issue of interactional heterogeneity (Ten Have, 1991; Lacoste, 1993), particularly in terms of knowledge, through a few medical consultations produced in French in the Algerian context. The aim of this work is to fill the scientific gaps felt in the field of research on this type of social interaction. While the doctor has more medical knowledge than the patient, he or she has no information about the patient's case (experiential knowledge (Dominicé, 2010). He must therefore deal with this heterogeneity of experiential knowledge if he is to accomplish his task of making a diagnosis. Analysis of a corpus of recorded conversations shows that the question is one of the procedures used by the doctor to determine the patient's condition. Moreover, the heterogeneity of knowledge is a driving force in medical consultations, insofar as it generates a succession of adjacent "question/answer" pairs that enable their development.
