SUPPLY CHAIN DEVELOPMENT FOR CIRCULARITY IN AEROSPACE: AIRCRAFT SEAT CASE STUDY

This study addresses the challenge of waste reduction in the aerospace industry by focusing on the recyclability of aircraft interior materials, specifically aircraft seats. Currently, a significant portion of these materials end up in landfills. The research develops a simulation model to visualise recycling practices for aircraft seats, assessing material types, volumes, and recyclability. By comparing current disposal methods with recycling opportunities, the model offers insights into the potential environmental and economic benefits of adopting circular economy principles. The findings suggest that supply chain decisions in the aerospace sector can significantly enhance sustainability by reducing carbon emissions, and indicate a potential business case for recycling. The model serves as a foundation for decision-making tools aimed at optimising material recovery for aircraft seat components, contributing to a more circular aerospace supply chain. Future work aims to extend this approach to other components and industries, fostering cross-sector collaboration to promote sustainable development.
